Font Test/Viewer Tool

Purpose Of The Tool

Sometimes as developers and web designers work, they need to find and/or setup just the right font for their purposes. This little tool is designed to help you with that quest. Also, when using a specialty font, you may need to get a certain unusual character, but to get it easily you need to know what the equivalent normal character in that font would be. That's another use for this tool.

Start The Tool

On the opening screen or "WELCOME" tab, go to the "Tools" menu, then select the option "Font Test/Viewer." When this option is selected, you will see a screen something like the one shown in the image below.

Using The Tool

When the tool starts you'll see the standard Windows® font dialog on top of the tool's form--just as shown in the image above. You can click "OK" to use the offered font setup and move forward if you like, or you can select the font you're interested in if you already know what it is and then click "OK." Either way, once you select a font, your font dialog will disappear and you'll be left with your tool window. It will look something like the image shown below at this point.

Let's take a minute to look at what you're seeing. We'll begin on the left and work right. The "Normal ASCII " column shows what the character for a "normal ASCII" font would look like. The second column, labeled " Selected Font " shows what the character is in the selected font. The third column, the "Decimal Equivalent " is the value of the ASCII character in decimal (base-10) format. The top-right block of information describes the selected font showing the following information about it:

The next group box, shown in light-green background color, gives the classic sentence used to print all alpha characters--"The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back" -- and then adds the numerics zero through nine. That lets you see what all the standard characters look like when using the selected font.

If you don't like the selected font as much as you expected and want to try a different font, click the "Select Font" button in the lower-right corner of the form. This will reopen the Windows® font-selection dialog.

The "Size Menu" will let you quickly change the size of the font displayed.

The "Style Menu" will let you quckly try the other syltes that are most used--bold, italics, bold-italics, etc.

Finally, there's the "Options Menu." By default, you'll see Vector and Vertical fonts, but you have the option to see only fixed-pitch fonts. (Fixed pitch fonts are fonts that use the same width for all their characters which "normal" fonts do not--required for columnar forms.)

And there's one last option--you can use a different sample sentence that's different from "the quick brown fox." If you do this, don't forget to include the numeric characters, too.
