We recommend that you purchase a USB-Hard Drive at least 2.5 times the size of your computer's hard drive and use Symantec's Ghost product to make a full backup of your system about once per month. Then keep the USB-Drive somewhere safe and far away from your computer. This will let you do a full system restore if it becomes necessary with a minimum of data loss. Need CD/DVD Burner Software?
(10/1/2006) I got a new notebook by HP and I loaded a copy of my favorite CD/DVD burning software--about a $90 package at your friendly computer emporeum. To my dismay it did not see the CD/DVD writer that was part of my system. If you have this problem, you need to first be sure that Windows can see it as a burner. To do this just go to START>>Settings>>Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager. Now click on your cd unit. See if has a tab for "Recording." Be certain that enable burning is checked. If it isn't, check it, restart Windows, and see if it fixed your problem...could be.
In my case it did not. A little research led me to believe that my favorite software couldn't detect the burner, even though Windows could. In fact, using WIndows Explorer I could drag & drop files and directories to the CD. There was no way I could close the CD, but I could actually write to it.But I found something else...a new CD/DVD burner package you can download and use for free. That fixed the problem for me, so I now have a new favorite package. Check out www.CDburnerXP.se and it may become your new favorite too. Unforuntately, they haven't released a version yet that works on Vista...but check their website if you're in need and maybe they'll have it out by the time you read this.
